Make Bulgaria Queer Again (2021) is a site specific installation shown at the Museum for Contemporary Art in Sofia. The exhibition is curated by Selma Selman and Peter Lee.
These are photographs and artefacts documenting the artist's journey through Bulgaria, the main purpose of which is to photograph people on their way wearing the red "MAGA" hat, with a caption paraphrasing the famous conservative and homophobic slogan of former US President Donald Trump.
The installation features this ambiguous mix of queer sexuality and homophobic pseudo-patriotism in which some abstract tradition or Bulgarianness with references to an equally abstract wonderful past is juxtaposed with the contemporary living bodies of the artist. With their openness, their exposed skin, they demand that this society turn to the future and make "Bulgaria queer again", or at least acknowledge their existence in the here and now. The clothes and objects used during the journey - are arranged in a circle on the ground, creating a sense of a safe place, a territory that can accept this queer identity thrown out of traditional society.
