“WTF” - heard in the audience while performers were dancing to the Schengen turbofolk song by Kali
Funny Papers is a performance conceived by Lexi Fleurs with the help of Lili MartO that premiered at the Wiesbaden Biennale 2022 .
Lili & Lexi’s celebration is an explosive performance of excess, contradiction, and chaotic joy, transforming the wedding—a ritual of unity—into a site of institutional critique and cultural confrontation. By blending Balkan kitsch, TikTok-era spectacle, and the absurdity of east-west cultural clashes, the piece dismantles hierarchies of ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture. It revels in the aesthetics of so-called ‘trash’—Chalga, Rakia, and clowns wielding napkins—exposing how Eastern European identity is both fetishized and dismissed in global pop culture discourse. In this performance, the Balkans are not a periphery to be ‘understood’ but a carnival of self-definition, where propaganda meets play, tradition meets chaos, and the act of celebration itself becomes radical.
